Self-employed tradesmen must get their marketing right

New businesses, such as self-employed plumbers and electricians, need to carefully consider how they promote themselves in order to survive in the current climate, according to one marketing expert.
A study carried out by YouGov has found that around one-third of small businesses plan to try to market their way out of the recession by using advertising to stand out from the crowd.
However, Ben Harris, managing director of the New Brand Vision Group, said too many start-ups fall into the trap of wasting their marketing budget on ineffective strategies.
"Business is a leap of faith and there aren't many places you can go to validate someone but a well presented business card, brochure or website are places where you can start to trust people," he advised.
People made redundant through the recession are increasingly setting up their own businesses, according to Penny Power of business social network Ecademy.
