Short courses could make all the difference
An adult learning organisation is promoting the benefits of taking short educational courses in later life.
The National Institute of Adult Continuing Education (NIACE) says adult learning courses offer a valuable service, both for getting people back into work and producing a fairer society.
Research from NIACE suggests that adults interested in education want 'bite-sized' courses that can address their particular needs, due to pressures of work and family commitments.
"If we fail people first time round by not providing them with the skills base they need for adult life then we have to do something about it," says Alan Tuckett, chief executive of NIACE.
While he accepts that short courses are not a complete education, he says they are crucial for "getting people started on a learning journey".
Hundreds of thousands of adults have benefited from the government's Skills For Life strategy, which aims to help people through qualifications such as literacy, numeracy and ICT.
