Small businesses are vulnerable to crime
By Charles Murphy
Crimes against small firms, such as self-employed plumbers and electricians, make up one-fifth of all reported crime, according to the Federation of Small Businesses (FSB).
Recent research from the British Chambers of Commerce shows that nearly 350,000 offences against business can be identified from crimes recorded by the police between 2008 and 2009.
The body has called for better business crime statistics in order to allow police, councils and businessmen to tackle the growing problem.
A spokesperson for the FSB said that many firms believe they do not get an adequate response from police when they record business crime.
"Crime can affect any businesses in different ways," he commented. "Any business with a shop front may fall victim to vandalism or graffiti. There is also a risk of theft or attacks on staff."
Figures from small business insurer AXA show that for the second consecutive year, offences against firms have increased by around ten per cent.
