Tradesmen still find work during recession
Skilled tradesmen are still finding plenty of work during the recession, according to government-supported scheme TrustMark.
Stuart Carter, public relations and marketing manager at the organisation indicated that Brits are becoming more savvy about how they find tradesmen.
Recent research by Homeserve found that more than a quarter (27 per cent) of tradesmen are willing to make cash payments for tradesmen work.
However, this leaves them little chance to claim compensation if they are unsatisfied with the work done.
But Mr Carter admitted that many homeowners are actually being more selective about how they select their tradesmen.
He said: "It's good for the tradesmen, it is difficult times for them but they are getting more business.
"I was talking to somebody who said: 'Suddenly, the sun is shining and things are picking up now'. He is as busy as he was last year, this year."
Times have certainly improved compared to last year, he added, although it is still clear there is a downturn in the market.
