Tradesmen help Stroud building go green
By Susie Cho
Tradesmen in Stroud have helped to deliver a major green refurbishment project on one of the town's historic buildings.
The Exchange has been refitted to include an underground heat pump to generate power for the building along with photovoltaic panels that draw energy from the sun.
Additionally, the space features a shared workplace that up to 15 local organisations can use, a conference facility for 50 people, new meeting rooms and a fully-equipped kitchen.
A variety of organisations supported the refurbishment work, including the Gloucestershire Rural Renaissance Fund, Charity Bank and the Carbon Trust.
"The ongoing development of The Exchange has been our plan from day one," commented project manager Clare Mahdiyone.
"We have now succeeded in creating a truly innovative space within the confines of an old and very traditional working building."
Stroud College is currently seeking ways to improve its carbon footprint, which may include eco-friendly refurbishment work carried out by tradesmen.
