Government needs to encourage homebuilding
By Brian de Selby
The government needs to encourage more homebuilding to prevent another house price boom in the future, it has been claimed.
Factors which contributed to the last house price boom need to be remedied in advance to prevent a recurrence in the future, according to PricedOut.org.uk.
The national campaign's Katy John explained that further house price rises need to be avoided so that first-time buyers are not priced out of the market.
She said: "The government needs to go further.
"Not by funding more shared ownership schemes, but by increasing taxation of multiple property ownership and buy-to-let, building more houses, and implementing the reforms outlined in Lord Turner's report."
The Daily Telegraph housing affordability index shot to its highest level last week, indicating that houses were at their most affordable since 1996 in the first quarter of this year.
The index rose from 108.4 points to 118 in the first three months of this year, with 100 points representing the average affordability level since the early 1960s.
